HP Debuts Its Newest Z Series of Workstations

If you’re in the market for a new server or a workstation system, HP’s bringing some hot new stuff off the oven. Its new Z8 workstation is all about giving you as much options as possible, with Z6 and Z4 systems available on the side for users on a tighter budget.

On the processor side, your options are covered by Intel’s popular Xeon line, and you get plenty of room in terms of choices. Starting from 1.7 GHz hexa-core Xeon Bronze 3104 and 2.6 GHz Xeon Silver 4112, they go up to the blockbuster Xeon Platinum Platinum 8180 with its 28 cores.
Graphics options include up to Nvidia’s new $6000 Quadro GP100, Radeon Pro WX 9100 or 24 GB Quadro P6000.
While these specs are impressive in their own right, perhaps more impressive is that you can have multiple of these options in a single package, allowing you up to 56 cores and two Quadro cards at the same time.

RAM, Storage and Connectivity

The insane specs continue on the memory side too. The RAM can be had of up to 3 TB capacity on the back of its 24 slots, while storage options are a bit more varied. You can have up to two M.2 SSDs, alongside a number of HDD options for a total of 48 TB of storage.
A 1700W power supply keeps things active. For connectivity, you get USB-C 3.1, optional Thunderbolt 3, 1 dual GbE ports, as well as 9 PCIe slots.

Pricing

The Z8 workstation starts at $2439 for a single-CPU model, though, stack up various storage and processing options and you’re looking a price-tag easily in the range of a small hatchback.
The Z6 meanwhile starts at $1919, and the Z4 at $1249. Both can be had in storage and RAM options which are enough for most situations and for most people.
Neither can claim the tag of world’s most powerful workstation PC, though.
