Good news for Pakistani expatriates in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom has announced that it will be unblocking Skype, WhatsApp & Viber, a development that is sure to make the lives of the many expatriates easier who live and work in KSA. Gulf Countries Relax Strict Rules on Chatting Apps WhatsApp was unblocked from the UAE back in June, and now Saudi Arabia is hoping to do the same. The Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdullah bin Amer Al-Sawahah said, Coordination between the Communications and Information Technology Commission and telecommunications service providers is underway to enable everyone to benefit from applications that provide voice and video communications over the Internet. He also said cooperating bodies had confirmed their commitment to enable all users in the Kingdom to use applications to make voice and video calls of the highest quality. He added that all applications will be monitored and reviewed periodically.

Rumors have been popping up across the interwebs about Google planning to buy HTC’s mobile division. Turns out those rumors are actually closer to the truth. According to Commercial Times, a Chinese news site, Google is in the final stages of negotiations with HTC about buying out its smartphone division. Rough Times for HTC HTC has been through tough times since the launch of its flagship phone HTC One M9 a few years ago. The Taiwanese company struggled to become relevant again in the smartphone realm with the HTC 10 and more recently, U11. However, it just wasn’t enough to propel HTC towards the top of the market again. Digitimes reported that the company’s revenues in August this year were the lowest in 13 years. If not Google, someone else might have bought out HTC’s smartphone division. The number of data breaches have increased quite a lot in the past year. Instagram has  also become a victim to similar attacks. The attack this time was pretty serious and caused some real damage. The bug allowed the hackers to obtain phone numbers and email addresses of some high-profile users, however, passwords remained safe. The bug was detected in the API of the app, which is used to communicate with other websites. Last year in November, a similar breach was faced by Google, Facebook and Twitter where the encrypted passwords and usernames of almost two million users were stolen by attackers. Instagram has refused to give out any further details as to who was targeted in the attack. It has neither given any names nor has released the number of people who were affected. Man Charged With Drug Offenses Because $324K Smelt Like Cocaine

A 46-year-old man was arrested and charged on drug offenses because his stash of $324,000 smelt like cocaine. Gerald Flores was pulled over by police in Bergen, New Jersey in June and when officers searched his SUV they discovered seven bundles of cash wrapped in plastic and placed in a hidden compartment of his vehicle, Bergen County prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal in the case claimed. After counting the money the authorities not only realised it was over a quarter of a million dollars, it also smelled strongly of cocaine. Explaining the odor in the civil forfeiture complaint, which was filed this month Grewal wrote: “While counting the currency, it gave off a distinct odor of cocaine.” No drugs were found during the search, but despite this Flores was still charged with transporting or possessing property believed to be derived from criminal activity.
